Health

BEFORE YOU GO

Language & Friendship asks that participants be in excellent health! The fast pace and strenuous nature of group travel requires high energy, flexibility, and resourcefulness. Success on the program depends on being physically and mentally prepared to fully participate and adapt in another culture.

Any physical and emotional/psychological health issues you have will follow you when you travel. New surroundings and circumstances can exacerbate existing issues. Please address your situation honestly and discuss it with your teacher/leader.

Any changes or additions to the health information you indicated on your application must be communicated to Language & Friendship.

Dietary Needs: Travelers with dietary restrictions are expected to eat what they can and take responsibility for packing/buying supplements if necessary.

Preferences vs. Restrictions: Regarding food, smoke or pets, if you indicate a restriction on your application and it is not controlled by medication, is it truly a severe condition that cannot be controlled with medication or is it just a preference? The distinction is important.

WHILE YOU ARE ABROAD

  • Keep your general health strong by getting a good night’s rest and eating healthy.
  • Stay positive and focused on the wonderful opportunity you have to experience so many new places and meet new friends.

IF YOU BECOME SICK OR INJURED WHILE ABROAD

  • You will be given medical care as needed (your parents have signed a release authorizing medical care). All Language & Friendship programs include accident and sickness insurance coverage (amounts of coverage are indicated below).
  • Be prepared to pay for doctor visits and medication. Medical facilities normally require payment on site.(Costs are usually less than in the U.S.) If it turns out to be more than you can pay, your teacher will contact your parents or L&F for assistance.
  • Be sure to keep all doctor bills, prescriptions, and receipts so that a claim can be filed for reimbursement when you return. Your teacher will have claim forms, or you may contact the L&F office.
