Preparation = Success

The best way to ensure a successful program abroad is good preparation, for you and for your child.

Student Guidebook: Knowing what to expect, how to handle situations that might arise and the necessary items to bring are just some of the areas of preparation that are covered in the Student Guidebook, which you will receive from your teacher after group enrollment. It is essential that you and your child read and re-read this information and for students to attend all preparation meetings planned by the teacher.

Our daughter had a fabulous time. She learned so much and wishes she had more time with her host family. Experiences like this are really wonderful and help move the individual toward independence and their larger place in the world.

Top Tips for Parent Preparation:

  • Attend meetings - they will help you and your child know what to expect and give you an opportunity to ask important questions.
  • Be prepared to let go - this experience will be an important step in your child's independence. Your ability to let them experience this program time on their own can be a difficult, but is an essential part of their success.
  • Send a note of thanks to your organizing teacher. Planning this type of program requires a lot of time and energy. Knowing that their efforts are valued and that the impact on the student is recognized is what motivates busy teachers to continue offering this experience.
  • Send a note of thanks to the family hosting your child - though it goes without saying that you appreciate their generosity, it always helps to hear this parent to parent.
